Spin is a technique used to earn Boost Points while in mid air. Spinning is preformed by tilting the right analog stick left or right in ModNation Racers for the PS3 and ModNation Racers: Road Trip, or by tilting the analog stick left or right or pressing the directional buttons in ModNation Racers for the PlayStation Portable.
Spinning a multiple of 360 degrees while in mid air and landing facing the same direction as when you left the ground will award boost points. Rotating in the opposite direction from the last spin will reduce the amount of degrees rotated when landing successfully. If you land rotated to the left or right from where you first left the jump you cannot earn spin points from jumps, and because of the changed direction you may also suddenly start going into a wall or even drive backwards on the track. Each multiple of 360 degrees will give a bonus of 2,500 points in the PS3 game and Road Trip or 5,000 points in the PSP game.
The amount of degrees rotated during the spin will be shown next to the boost gauge as well as the amount of points obtained. In the PS3 game and Road Trip, only spins up to 1080 degrees will be shown with the amount of degrees in the rotation icon, higher spins will result in a generic star icon appearing that does not show the amount of degrees rotated. In the PSP game, the amount of degrees rotated will be shown in the icon as well as text separate from the icon regardless of how many degrees rotated during the spin.
Larger spins require more air time in order to correctly perform. For example, the two small jumps on Mod Circuit usually only allow a 360 degree spin to be performed successfully, while the Mega Jump props on Sandstorm allow for 1440 degree spins to be performed easily.
In the PSP version of the game, spinning is subject to bugs. Sometimes when drifting into a Mega Jump prop, you'll be locked into slowly spinning. This will not count towards spin point bonuses even if a successful spin is made this way. In addition, sometimes it is simply not possible to spin while in mid air due to bugs in the game.
