Shielding is a way to protect against attacks from players and the environment. Shielding requires at least five thousand Boost Points (in ModNation Racers) to activate a one second shield, and will quickly use up more boost if used for longer than a second.
In ModNation Racers for the PlayStation Portable, activating a shield uses up ten thousand boost points, and shield time is fixed in duration, so players must reactivate the shield if it is needed for longer periods of time.
In ModNation Racers: Road Trip, shielding uses up boost points at a fixed rate and can be up for any amount of time while the user has enough Points to keep the shield active.
In the PS3 game and Road Trip, the shield is portrayed as a yellow glowing shield. In the PSP game, the weapon is portrayed as a blue shield with yellow arcs across it and faint yellow arcs on the edge of the shield. A graphical error occurs with certain hair styles, which can result in Mods appearing bald when a shield is activated in the PSP game.
In ModNation Racers: Road Trip, a shield is activated when firing a level three weapon, however this shield is of the same color as the weapon icon and will only protect against attacks from the same type of weapon at any level.
